May 10 - A number of our domains appear to have been forged in from lines by spammers. So if you receive bounce messages for mail you did not send, this is why (it is called backscatter and is a common occurance on the Internet), we are addressing them as we see them.
May 7 - Thank you for lighting up our inbox with some great ideas. Not only do we have an incredible family of subscribers, but some very accomplished ones as well. We thank you for your input and we will be getting in touch. Right now we are still sorting through the replies, so if you haven't heard from us yet, please be patient, we are trying to respond to all.
May 5 - We're going to try something different. Would you like six months of free service?
We became a "Ramen profitable" company more than a decade before it was even a term. We bootstrapped from there for 13 years since (meaning our growth in offered services was (and still is) fully funded by subscribers, we have absolutely no investors. This was also when people were taking millions in VC and basically told to mismanage it into bankruptcy...burn rate it was called...(and we had our chance too), we wanted no part of it (which is why we are still here and many of them are not).
We also did something unheard of, we never advertised. Thirteen years and you did it all for us via word of mouth, telling your friends what a great service we offered (granted we offer a referral bonus, but we'd like to think you did it because we do offer great services). Well, because of you, we made it. We're solid and not going anywhere. We are incredibly grateful for having such amazing subscribers.
However, now we have our sights set much higher in service offerings. We want to become very much more than we are and and offer privacy on a much broader spectrum, we have a great plan, but it requires a lot of dev work. Unfortunately, to get there requires funding, which in our case, means more subscribers. Here is where we will try a little advertising and also where the free months to you come in. We are looking for newsletters and magazines that people who value their privacy regularly read. We're looking for those places where our service would be useful to the subscribers of that publication. So, suggest one we place an ad in, get six months time.
In the past, we have received some incredible suggestions from our family of subscribers, after all, it's your service and you all built it with your suggestions. A large number of you have been with us for 10+ years now, we consider you family, we consider this service yours. So we thought we'd ask you, where do you think we should advertise?
May 1 - We have increased the number of allowed fetch mail accounts, so you can add more accounts you want to centralize with us. If you hit the new limit, let us know, we can increase it more if necessary.
Apr 8 - The CGI proxy is back online.
Apr 8 - The CGI proxy is currently unavailable while we perform some upgrades. No other services are affected.
Feb 20 - We are again offering virtual private servers and, as a new addition, both unmanaged dedicated servers and fully managed smtp and vpn/proxy servers. We offer unmetered bandwidth with all at competitive pricing. In fact, we don't think you'll find a better deal for truly unmetered bandwidth.
Feb 11 - We have disabled accounts that expired last month and were not renewed. If your's was one and you wish to renew it, you can do so here.
Dec 17 - Recap - We have recently completed many changes:
- All pop, imap, and webmail servers have had both hardware and software upgrades.
- The mail network is now a sonet ring of four providers for at or very near 100% network uptime.
- We upgraded hardware, software, and bandwidth on the socks proxies.
- We upgraded hardware, software, and bandwidth on our SSH Tunnel servers.
- We upgraded our VPN servers and will soon be adding more.
- We doubled all purchased mail quotas and purchased mail data send quotas.
- We added truly unmetered bandwidth Virtual Dedicated Servers to our offerings.
- We added inexpensive Dedicated Managed VPN servers to our offerings.
- We're not done, more is coming :)
Dec 10 - Socks proxy users using Firefox:
In the browser location bar (the place where you type web addresses), type about:config and press Enter. This opens a different set of Firefox preferences.
Where it says "Search:" or "Filter:" at the top, type network.proxy.socks. The list of preferences will automatically change to show your proxy preferences.
Find ‘network.proxy.socks_remote_dns’ below and double-click it. The value will change from false to true. If it does not with a double-click, right click it and select Toggle.
Close Firefox and restart it.
This will force all DNS lookups to happen through the socks proxy.
Nov 09 - This was announced here in Aug, just bumping it back up for new mountain lion users:
VPN Users who are runni
ng MAC OSX mountain lion: Please note that Tunnelblick has problems with mountain lion. Google is aware of this and has a current
beta towards addressing the issue:
Upgrading to the latest 3.3 beta should resolve your issues with mountain lion.
Reminder: Because we are a privacy service, we do not back up your personal e-mail. This means that when you delete it, it is gone for good and not floating around in some backup that can be retrieved from us against your will. However, it also means you must download and save your important mail, because if you accidently delete it, it's as gone as the mail you wanted deleted.
Custom domain - You can also use your own registered domain with us. Your own domain will work with our
service just like all the domains we already offer. If you wish to do this please contact helpdesk with your account
name and the registered domain name so we can set it up. We can host both web and e-mail for your domain or just
the e-mail, your choice.
All of our e-mail features will work with both our domains and your own domain after doing so (in other words,
you don't lose any of your cotse domains and addresses, you just gain new ones with your own domain), including
unlimited aliases in the form of email@example.com.
Unlike our domains, your account name will not appear in the e-mail address for your own domain. We can also point
specific aliases at other cotse accounts if you and your family, friends, or business users also have accounts
with us. This service is free with your paid account.
